With something just as horrific as the coronavirus, we need some levity. What more to do the job this month than the horror genre? (Sorry, comic book films and blockbusters.) At the beginning of the month, we had The Invisible Man. Last week, we got news of a Dracula film being in the works, and just last week was Friday the 13th. Today, we have more good news in terms of monster sub-genre.

FINAL DESTINATION 5

At the beginning of last year, a reboot to the Final Destination franchise was said to be in the works and written by Saw screenwriters Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan as per The Hollywood Reporter. Now, Bloody Disgusting provided updated details on this newest movie. In a Digitial Spy interview with franchise creator Jeffrey Reddick and producer Craig Perry, the upcoming sixth film is not necessarily a reboot but will still be set within the Final Destination universe. Reddick says:

I’ve been talking to Craig and the concept behind it is unique. I think ‘reboot’ is probably too strong of a word, it makes it sound like they’re going to change everything, but it’s definitely a Final Destination movie. Craig is the master of coming up with crazy openings and set pieces. He’s told me a couple of things that happen in this one and it’s going to be a lot of fun. It’s not going feel like cash-grab Final Destination film.

The most recent Final Destination installment was the fifth film, which was released in 2011. Horror fans have waited too long! In a world plagued with the supernatural four horsemen (that is, war/conquest, famine, pestilence, and death), this movie would prove relevant to current events.

Additionally, the sixth film in the franchise will also focus on first responders. According to the producer:

We’re toying with having it take place in the world of first responders: EMTs, firemen and police. These people deal with death on the front lines every day, and make choices that can cause people to live or die. We rely on their good judgement, expertise and calm demeanour. So why not put those people in the nightmare situation where every choice can bring about life and death – but now for themselves? We’re thinking that world might be an interesting way into a Final Destination movie, and one which can also generate unique set pieces in a very credible way … I don’t think anybody will look at a revolving door in the same way again…

Every installment of the series focused on a character who had a premonition but saved themselves and those around them, at least until Death caught up to each one by one. We’ve seen first responders in the background pick up the pieces (sometimes literally) and clean up the messes left after every death scene. Now, they get to be foregrounded and get their own spotlight!
