Over a decade since the release of the most recent Final Destination film, we now have an update on the sixth installment of the franchise. Supernatural horror fans, please brace yourselves for some good news.

Death is Returning

According to Adam B. Vary via Variety, filmmaker Jon Watts will reportedly produce Final Destination 6 (whether this is or is not the official title is yet to be announced) at New Line Cinema. His wife/partner Dianne McGunigle will also produce the film with Final Destination franchise producers, Craig Perry and Sheila Hanahan Taylor.

Late last year, it was announced that Lori Evans Taylor will pen the screenplay for the sixth film. In Variety‘s report, it was revealed that Guy Busick (Ready or Not, Scream) will co-write the script with Taylor. Additionally, it is announced that the film will be streaming exclusively via HBO Max, Warner Media’s streaming service.

As of now, news on production and release date have not yet been reported.

The Final Destination films each follow a group of individuals who survive collective death by means of premonition, but they eventually die in the “freak accidents” that follow.

The Producers’ Statements on Final Destination 6

Watts spoke out about his and his wife’s involvement in the franchise:

Both Dianne and I have been massive fans of ‘Final Destination’ from the very beginning. So to be able to have a hand in crafting a new story with the original team and New Line is going to be both fun and exciting.

Perry also got to speak about their role in the franchise.

Jon and Dianne’s passion for the series is only matched by how much fun they are to work with. Sheila and I couldn’t be more excited to have their creative energy driving this latest installment in the ‘Final Destination’ franchise with New Line. With Guy and Lori’s inspired execution of Jon’s original idea, we have a movie that audiences are gonna love.

Background on Final Destination 6

Watts has directed the high school Spider-Man trilogy (Homecoming, Far From Home, and No Way Home) for Marvel Studios’ Marvel Cinematic Universe. His next directorial project is currently the upcoming Fantastic Four film for the billion-dollar Disney franchise.

In March 2020, reports say that that Final Destination 6 will enlist Saw franchise screenwriters Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan. Although with Taylor and Busick now on board, it does not seem like that is the case anymore. The reports also stated that the new installment will involve first responders in the foreground. However, no news updates regarding the plot have been reported.

Jeffrey Reddick wrote the screenplays for both Final Destination and its sequel, Final Destination 2, and is essentially the creator of the franchise. He also has writing credits on Day of the Dead, The Final Wish, The Call, and Netflix’s animated fantasy action-adventure animated series, A Tale Dark & Grimm.

I got to speak with Reddick back in mid-September 2021, an interview that I will publish soon.
