Exclusive: ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Season 3 & ‘The Man Who Fell To Earth’ Set To Have Theatrical Release At Showcase Cinemas

The Cinema Spot has learned that Showcase Cinemas are aiming to show Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 and The Man Who Fell To Earth in their movie theaters.

As an effort to support sister-company Showcase Cinemas during (and after) the quagmire that is the coronavirus outbreak, a select few CBS All Access originals will be shown in Showcase Cinemas theaters for free to subscribers of Showcase Cinema’s new subscription service.

Currently, it is only known that Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 and The Man Who Fell To Earth fall under this deal, though other series from ViacomCBS will have similar arrangements.

While Star Trek: Discovery season 3 is made for television, we have heard that CBS All Access might be reworking The Man Who Fell To Earth to better fit being shown in movie theaters. It is currently unknown what changes will be made, though this new version of The Man Who Fell To Earth has been described to me as an “immersive experience.” 

Alongside these CBS All Access originals, Showcase Cinemas will be showing other television series and films once they land more distribution rights. Because there aren’t many films coming out, they’ll be bringing classic films and TV series to the big screen.

CBS All Access (known as 10 All Access in Australia) is a streaming service owned and operated by CBS, a subsidiary of ViacomCBS. It offers original content, content newly aired on CBS’s broadcast properties, and content from CBS’s library. CBS All Access will be undergoing a rebranding soon as it expands to incorporate more of the company’s cable brands and library programming.

Showcase Cinemas is a movie theater chain owned and operated by National Amusements. It operates more than 950 indoor screens, with 32 theater locations in the United States and a number of other theaters across the United Kingdom, Brazil, and Argentina. In Brazil, Showcase is known as “UCI Cinemas”.

The Man Who Fell to Earth is based on the Walter Tevis novel and the cult classic 1976 film starring David Bowie. Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet co-wrote the pilot script and serve as executive producers and co-showrunners alongside John Hlavin. The series was originally set to air on Hulu.

Star Trek: Discovery is the first scripted series developed specifically for CBS All Access. The series begins roughly a decade before the events of the original Star Trek series and follows the crew of the USS Discovery on various adventures. While we are waiting for the third season to premiere, CBS All Access has already renewed the series for a fourth and fifth seasons, with a feature film on the way. A spin-off series centered around Captain Pike titled Strange New Worlds has also been announced, with the series eyeing Jake Cannavale for the role of Kirk as we previously revealed.

It is currently unknown when The Man Who Fell To Earth will begin production, be it as a movie or television series. The Star Trek: Discovery season 3 release date is also being kept under wraps.
