Over the weekend, fans of Looney Tunes and John Cena were heavily disappointed after Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) canceled the upcoming animated adventure fantasy-comedy film, Coyote Vs. Acme. The film, which stars John Cena and Will Forte, had finished filming in New Mexico in 2022 and was set to release on Max, formerly HBO Max. The completed film was officially pulled from release on Nov. 9th during a Q3 earnings call, where it was announced that it would be used as a tax write-off. WBD was making it the second major finished project from the studio in recent years to receive such treatment. The other previously shelved project was the DC Comics film, Batgirl.

In a twist of events, the studio has allowed the film’s director, Dave Green, to shop the film. The news reported initially by Puck has since been confirmed to be true. The decision comes after a weekend riddled with backlash from fans and those who worked on the project. Puck shared that Warner Bros. film chiefs Mike De Luca, Pam Abdy, and animation head Bill Damaschke decided that Coyote Vs. Acme would be eligible to be picked up by another studio if the crew could find a bid.

After learning the news, the cast and crew turned to social media to share their disbelief in Warner Bros.’s prior announcement. One of the most vocal was director Green.

It was said by writer-director Brian Duffield, who saw the film that the film “tested in the high 90s repeatedly.” The entire ordeal has had those who worked on the film claiming that Warner Bros. Discovery is “anti-art.” The film also received comparisons to the 1988 film Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Hopefully, with these proven test scores and a comparison to a classic film, Coyote Vs. Acme will see the light of day.
