Even though it has been four years since the American film adaptation of Alita: Battle Angel, James Cameron seemingly confirms not one, but two sequels; recently, James Cameron sat down to discuss him selling his California coastal ranch for $33 million and to fan’s surprise, Alita: Battle Angel. Cameron confirms that he will set aside time to work on a second and third installment in the Alita series. Cameron had this to say on the future of the Alita sequels:

And on Avatar, I’m working in Wellington and Los Angeles. And on the new Alita: Battle Angel films, I’ll be working in Austin, so it just didn’t make sense for us (to live there) anymore.

The Hero of Iron City

Alita: Battle Angel is a 2019 sci-fi action film directed by Robert Rodriguez set in a post-apocalyptic world where Dr. Dyson Ido (Christoph Waltz) revives a discarded cyborg named Alita (Roza Salazar). Alita discovers her extraordinary combat abilities and embarks on a journey to uncover her forgotten past. In the bustling city of Iron City, Alita befriends a young man named Hugo (Keean Johnson). She becomes entangled in a dangerous world of street criminals, oppressive forces, and a high-speed sport called Motorball. As she fights against formidable adversaries and unravels the truth about her origins, Alita must confront her inner demons and make difficult choices to shape the city’s fate and inhabitants.

While the film received mixed reviews from critics, it found a dedicated fanbase and performed reasonably well at the box office, grossing over $400 million worldwide. The movie’s unique blend of sci-fi storytelling and groundbreaking visual spectacle left a lasting impact on audiences. In a related development, The Walt Disney Company acquired 21st Century Fox, including the film’s production studio, 20th Century Fox, in 2019. This acquisition brought the rights of Alita: Battle Angel under the Disney umbrella, which is partially why it has taken so long for future installments.

It looks like fans of both Avatar and Alita will have a bunch of screen time to enjoy in theaters in the years to come.
