Fans are preparing for the long-awaited sequel to 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse to swing into theaters. The cast and crew have begun interviews, and the press is slowly coming out as June 2nd approaches. Fans eagerly await the latest entry and look for news to crawl out from every corner of the web. Luckily, the directors of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse sat down with SFX magazine.

Spider-Man: Across the SpiderVerse is set one year after the events of Into the Spider-Verse when Gwen Stacy (voiced by Hailee Steinfeld) and Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore) reunite for the first time since fighting Kingpin (voiced by Liev Schreiber). The duo soon traverses the multiverse, where they encounter a team of Spider-People who protect the multiverse. When a new threat arises, and the Spider-People struggle with handling the challenge and each other, Miles is forced to reevaluate what being a hero truly means.

The Spider-Verse Strikes Back

In the latest issue of SFX, featuring Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, the directors talked about the upcoming second and third films in the trilogy, Across the Spider-Verse (2023) and Beyond the Spider-Verse (2024). Co-director Kemp Powers said, “Across The Spider-Verse is a movie on its own, but it definitely ends on a bit of a cliffhanger”. He further added:

I think it’s a good cliffhanger. We hope that it’s a satisfying tee-up for what’s coming in the third film, because you want people to be excited about what’s coming next. And it helps that we knew going in that this was part two of a three-part story. Since you already know that that third story is guaranteed, you can tackle it a bit differently. That being said, there’s a lot of key characters in this film, and there’s a story in this film that has an arc of its own that we needed to complete.

Although, there is one sequel that the directors looked towards for inspiration for what the film drew inspiration from in this trilogy. Co-director Joaquim Dos Santos said, “I was very satisfied after The Empire Strikes Back, and hopefully, this is our Empire.” This is a heavy goal to achieve when considering that Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back is considered one of the greatest sequels ever made. Yet, with Across the Spider-Verse being the second entry in a trilogy, the comparisons were ineffable.

Ultimately, this will lead to bad news for Miles and their friends as they face new foes. Empire Strikes Back had major character revelations and set up Jedi Returns, which Across the SpiderVerse will also be doing for Beyond the SpiderVerse. We, unfortunately, have to wait until June 2nd, to find out, but there are other Spider-Man-related ways to pass the time until then.

How to Swing the Time Away

With only a few weeks away, fans have much to look forward to when it comes to Spider-Man. Burger King will serve a promotional red bun Whopper with black sesame seeds starting May 15th until June 21st. Burger King will also be selling a matching sundae.

Spider-Man films are slowly being added to Disney+ for rewatching of the live-action adaptations starring Peter Parker. As for Miles, fans can check out the prequel series to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 for PS5. The issue launched on Free Comic Book Day and will be added to Marvel Ultimate soon.

On top of all that, an animated short is also set to launch in June titled The Spider Within. Check out the newest trailer to see Miles’ newest Spider-Pal, Spider-Cat!
