X-Men star James McAvoy is set to star in an American remake of the 2022 Danish thriller film Speak No Evil. Blumhouse will be the production studio behind the upcoming movie and mark the third collaboration between McAvoy and Blumhouse. The first two collaborations were in M. Night Shyamalan’s hit films Split (2016) and Glass (2019). Furthermore, The Woman in Black (2012) director James Watkins is set to direct the film and write the script. The remake is currently set for release to release in 2024.

The original film centers around a Danish family that befriends a Dutch family while on vacation. Sometime later, the Dutch family gets an invitation to reunite with their vacation friends. Unfortunately, things begin to go awry for the Danes upon reunion. The film is based on the screenplay pinned by Christian Tafdrup and Mads Tafdrup and is natively titled Gaesterne. Blumhouse’s Jason Blum is set to produce the upcoming project alongside one of the original writers, Christian Tafdrup, functioning this time as an executive producer.

Why This Remake is Exciting

James McAvoy is a lead actor who became a household name for many starring as a young Professor Charles Xavier in X-Men: First Class (2011) and portraying the iconic character until Dark Pheonix (2019). McAvoy is also known for being in It: Chapter Two (2019) and more recently in the BBC/HBO series His Dark Materials (2019-2022). On stage, McAvoy was recently nominated for Cyrano de Bergerac, which has received several other awards and nominations.

James Watkins directed The Woman in Black, the top-grossing British horror film making $129 million dollars worldwide. Watkins’s directorial debut was 2008’s Eden Lake. More recently, Watkins was a showrunner on The Ipcress Files, a sixties spy thriller. It’s also important to note that Watkins directed an episode of Netflix’s hit series Black Mirror (2011-present) titled ‘Shut Up and Dance.’

Beyond McAvoy and Watkins, Blumhouse has proven to be a heavy hitter within the thriller and horror genres. The studio launched with the 2007 hit Paranormal Activity and has captivated fans since. Blumhouse has also been behind Purge (2013), Halloween (2018), and The Invisible Man (2020). The studio has ties to some of the greatest horror films over the past sixteen years, and the upcoming remake of Speak No Evil will be joining the production studios growing catalog.

The Blumhouse and Universal remake of Speak No Evil is slated for release on August 9th, 2024.
