We have more good news for Star Wars fans looking to see the legendary Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi back on-screen. During a recent live-streamed charity event with Eddie Izzard, actor Ewan McGregor dropped new information regarding the upcoming Disney+ series. The upcoming web-series will begin filming in the coming months in Los Angeles, California.

In the live-stream, he states:

We start making it in the late spring [2021], and we’re gonna be shooting [the series] in [Los Angeles]. We are shooting it much in the way that The Mandalorian series was shot, using some of that technology. I liked the format of [the show], and I like the sort of Western nature of it … I’m excited because technology is so much more advanced [now] than it was [before].

The actor also praises director Deborah Chow for her work on The Mandalorian and looks forward to the principal photography of his series. Additionally, McGregor cites Episode II — Attack of the Clones as among the first films to be recorded digitally.

Background

The series was initially started as a rumor in August 2017, with the official announcement arriving during the D23 Expo event two Augusts later. Filming had to be put on hold last January due to rewrites of the teleplays, as the story felt too similar to The Mandalorian‘s. Later, in the latter half of 2020, Hayden Christensen was revealed to reprise his role as Sith Lord, Darth Vader. Although set a decade after Episode III, the series may return to the Clone Wars via flashbacks. Temuera Morrison might also return in his role as Clone Marshall Commander Cody.

Officially titled Obi-Wan Kenobi as per the Star Wars website, the web series will feature what Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy calls “the rematch of the century.”

Ewan McGregor has appeared in Disney’s Christopher Robin as the title character and (more recently) the DC Extended Universe’s Birds of Prey as Black Mask.
