Disney+ is developing ‘Kingdom of Wakanda’ series helmed by Ryan Coogler and his production company Proximity Media.

Earlier today, Deadline reported that Black Panther and Creed director Ryan Coogler has signed an exclusive deal with Disney Television which spans the next five years. This deal is reported to include a Black Panther spinoff centered on the Kingdom of Wakanda, home of the Black Panther. It was also reported that, during filming of Black Panther, Coogler was given a lot of creative freedom.

The Kingdom of Wakanda series is headed to Disney+, and will explore the nation of Wakanda as a drama, breaking away from the superhero aspect of the Marvel Comics property. These details are important to note, as it was rumored that the Black Panther sequel film  would follow a similar storyline. The sequel is helmed by Coogler, though specific plot details have yet to be revealed.

The exclusive deal Coogler and his production company, Proximity Media, signed does not limit Coogler and his team from working with some of Disney’s other divisions and subsidiaries to develop television content. It was reported that Proximity Media intends to develop projects of varying budgets and scopes.

The sequel to Black Panther is slated to release July 2, 2022, though the ongoing pandemic may push this date back. The role of T’Challa, according to Disney and Marvel Studios, will not be recast following the unfortunate and sudden passing of star Chadwick Boseman. The newly-announced Kingdom of Wakanda series has yet to receive a release date, and no more details are currently available.
