It almost feels like ages since we first found out that Fox and its properties would be brought over to Disney — including its Marvel properties, the X-Men and Fantastic Four. With Deadpool 2 having released in 2018, it was only a matter of time until we knew where (and when) the character’s next journey will take place.

In a video call, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirmed that the currently untitled third Deadpool movie would be set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will be having an R-rating. He states:

[The movie] will be rated R and we are working on a script right now, and Ryan’s overseeing a script right now… It will not be [filming] this year. Ryan is a very busy, very successful actor. We’ve got a number of things we’ve already announced that we now have to make, but it’s exciting for it to have begun. Again, a very different type of character in the MCU, and Ryan is a force of nature, which is just awesome to see him bring that character to life.

This is some exciting news, as we have been waiting for any details regarding characters to be transferred from the Marvel-Fox universe into the Disney-owned universe. Although, Disney did promise nearly two years ago that they will keep its future Deadpool film(s) under the R-rating.

When we last saw the Merc with a Mouth (Ryan Reynolds), the antihero used Cable (Josh Brolin)’s repaired time-traveling device to venture into different times in the past and rewrite parts of history. Deadpool contemplated murdering Adolf Hitler as a baby. 2009’s Wade Wilson (Reynolds) was killed during the events of X-Men Origins: Wolverine; and the actor Ryan Reynolds himself was killed before making the decision to join the DC Comics movie, Green Lantern.

Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin, known for their writing on Bob’s Burgers, will be penning the screenplay for the film. Principal photography will commence in 2022 — and a possible release date in 2023 — at the soonest, but we can only hope. The best thing that could come out of this is the wisecracking killer himself making an appearance or two of sorts in an MCU film anytime now. With the way that the MCU timeline for Phase Four onward is set up, it would be likely to see him appear in Jon Watts’s third Spider-Man film or in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

What are your thoughts on this decision? Which X-Men and Fantastic Four characters are you excited to make their MCU debut? Let us know! For more film, superhero, and Marvel-related news and reviews follow The Cinema Spot on Twitter (@TheCinemaSpot) and Instagram (@thecinemaspot_).
