We cannot have October this year without zombie outbreaks and sinister corporations to suit the mood! In a news report by Deadline, Constantin Film’s popular action-horror franchise Resident Evil will start anew with an origin story adaptation connected to Capcom’s video game series. The film will take place in 1998’s Raccoon City and will feature a new cast of the games’ familiar characters.

Brazilian-Italian actress Kaya Scodelario (The Maze Runner franchise) will play Claire Redfield, while American-Canadian actor Robbie Amell (Code 8, The Babysitter) will portray older brother Chris Redfield.

Norwegian-Nigerian actress Hannah John-Kamen (Black Mirror, Game of Thrones, Ant-Man and the Wasp) will play Jill Valentine, partner-in-crime of Chris Redfield.

British actor Tom Hopper (Merlin, Game of Thrones, The Umbrella Academy) will play Albert Wesker, the first video game’s initial supporting character but later primary antagonist of later installments. Canadian-British actor Avan Jogia (Victorious, Zombieland: Double Tap) shall portray Leon S. Kennedy, while American actor Neal McDonough (Arrow) will play William Birkin, another antagonist from the main games.

47 Meters Down director Johannes Roberts aims to return to the games’ first two installments for inspiration while providing “a grounded human story about a small dying American town that feels both relatable and relevant to today’s audiences.”

Constantin Film will distribute the reboot to German-speaking territories around the globe, while Sony Pictures‘ film division Screen Gems shall distribute domestically. The film was first reported to be in development back in May 2017.

UPDATE: In my original reporting of this news, I stated that the film would release under Netflix, which I had mixed up with other news regarding contemporary adaptations of the video game franchise that are in the works. For clarification, the film will definitely release through Constantin Film and Sony Pictures/ Screen Gems, while two television series will be made to release on Netflix:

  • One is a live-action series featuring two 14-year-old (twin?) sisters under the Wesker surname moving into Raccoon City during one timeline, while in a second timeline one sister is around her thirties, and the virus has spread and taken over the planet. The series will comprise of eight episodes, each with hour-long runtimes.
  • The second series is a CG anime series subtitled Infinite Darkness, releasing in 2021 and stars characters Claire Redfield and Leon Kennedy. The trailer can be shown down below:

What do you think of this casting news? Will you see this film? Have you played any of the games? Let us know! For more horror, film, and Sony-related news and reviews follow The Cinema Spot on Twitter (@TheCinemaSpot) and Instagram (@thecinemaspot_).
