I love the Harry Potter franchise of films. They were a significant part of my childhood and played an important role in my love of film. These movies are very nostalgic for me, especially the first two. Many in their early 20s like me probably share my love and nostalgia for the Wizarding world. Whether it’s the engaging characters, fascinating fantasy world, or amazing score, Harry Potter represents a significant period in film history. For the most part, they are all genuinely good films. Although the later films took on a darker tone, the original three struck a nice balance of whimsy and dark fantasy. Director Chris Columbus played a key role in establishing the tone and feel of the universe with the first two films in the series. He introduced many kids like myself to the magical world of Hogwarts, influencing the imaginations of audiences for years to come.

The first film in the series, The Sorcerer’s (or Philosophers) Stone, is my favorite. I believe that The Prisoner of Azkaban may be the better film overall. The first film has an added level of nostalgia and appeal that puts it on another level. It was my first time hearing that classic John Williams theme, my first time seeing the magical architecture of Hogwarts, and my first (but certainly not least) time rooting for these wonderful characters. I remember running around as a kid holding my plastic wand from the Harry Halloween costume, pretending to use spells, and explore Hogwarts. I feel as if my generation’s nostalgia for the first three Harry Potter films resembles the same feeling older generations feel for the original Star Wars trilogy. These films, while not perfect, will forever hold a special place in the hearts of many.

Besides being a magical fantasy film, the first entry in the Harry Potter series also makes for a great holiday watch. Much of my nostalgia for this film stems from the numerous rewatches around Halloween or Christmas. From the floating pumpkins in the Great Hall and the spooky creatures that roam the grounds to the massive Christmas trees and cozy handmade sweaters, this first film can be put on anytime during the Fall to enhance your holiday fun. The extra holiday appeal of the first film has added to its ability to be rewatched over time.

The wide appeal of the first film made it a great family watch. Even with a few scary scenes, there was enough whimsy and levity to keep kids engaged (although the troll did inspire a few nightmares). The incredible production design and world-building in this first installment did wonders for the imaginations of countless kids and adults. It is easy to feel the enchanting atmosphere of Hogwarts throughout the film. The sheer amount of merchandise and apparel this first film ended up creating is a true testament to the distinctive visual appeal of the world that Chris Columbus established.

The first film in the Harry Potter series is magical, fun, and timeless. Those that grew up with it have been made a Harry Potter fan for life. Growing up right alongside Harry made this series even more special for my generation. The first film will always remain my favorite and I will forever cherish its status as an ultimate nostalgia film.
