According to The Hollywood Reporter, a new Power Rangers film is in the works at Paramount Pictures, with Jonathan Entwistle as director.

The film will be a reboot from the 2017 film by Lionsgate. The news comes after Hasbro has bought the property from the creator Haim Saban back in 2018. Their production house Allspark Pictures is set to produce the film and Paramount Pictures as distributors.

THR also reported that the story “is said to involve a time-travel element that brings the kids to the 1990s, and in Back to the Future fashion, they have to find a way to get back to their present.”

The negotiations of Entwistle as director of the film was found rather odd, but inviting by fans as he’s famously know as the creator of the Netflix series It’s the End of the F—ing World. He’s also currently working on another Netflix project titled I’m Not Okay With This.

Previously, the 2017 Lionsgate film was an iteration of the characters that brought a more “darker” tone to the space rangers formula. What used to be a Japanese children’s show turned into a more “Young Adult-esque” adaptation, with an impressive cast such as Darce Montgormery as Jason, Naomi Scott as Kimberly, RJ Cycler as Billy, Becky G as Trini, Ludi Lin as Zack, Bill Hader as Alpha 5, Bryan Cranston as Zordon and Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa. There were plans to make various sequels with the cast, but unfortunately the film flopped, grossing as much as $142 million worldwide, carrying a budget of $100 million.
