In what seems to be an unexpected turn of events, Netflix has bought the rights to stream the entire Studio Ghibli filmography on their platform worldwide.
“This is a dream come true for Netflix and millions of our members,” said Aram Yacoubian, director of original animation at Netflix. “Studio Ghibli’s animated films are legendary and have enthralled fans around the world for over 35 years. We’re excited to make them available in more languages across Latin America, Europe, Africa and Asia — so that more people can enjoy this whimsical and wonderful world of animation.”
Now, if you’re wondering why didn’t they mentioned North America, it’s because the highly acclaimed animated films will NOT be available to stream in the US, Canada or Japan. The culprit? HBO Max. Back in October, HBO bought the rights to stream those films in the US and Canada on their soon-to-be-released platforms in Spring 2020.
For those lucky Netflix users not in the US, the 21 animated films will begin rolling out seven films each month from February to April. They will be released in the following order:
