Deadline reports that Paramount is planning a remake of the classic Alfred Hitchcock film Vertigo. Robert Downey Jr is in talks to star in the lead role. Downey is also producing the movie with his wife. The film is written by Steven Knight, best known for creating the TV show Peaky Blinders.

Vertigo initially released in 1958 and is based on the 1954 French novel D’entre les morts. The Hitchcock original starred James Stewart as John Ferguson, a cop who has developed vertigo causing him to retire. He is then hired to follow Madelaine, played by Kim Novak, a woman who behaves very strangely. The film is often considered one of Hitchcock’s best movies.

Hitchcock is one of the best directors of all time with an expansive and highly influential filmography. His films Rear Window, Psycho, Vertigo, and North by Northwest are among the best films ever made.

This Vertigo remake would mark the second time a major Hitchcock film was remade. A remake of Psycho released in 1998 directed by Gus Van Sant and starred Vince Vaughn.
