The Doctor Who universe is expanding. Deadline reports that a new Doctor Who spin-off centering around UNIT is in the works. Jemma Redgrave is expected to star. Redgrave has played Kate Stewart, the leader of UNIT, in a handful of episodes of Doctor Who for the past decade. Redgrave will appear again in the upcoming 14th series of Doctor Who before the spin-off. The spin-off is possible in part thanks to a deal with Disney+ to distribute the show internationally outside of the UK, where it is distributed by the BBC.
Current Doctor Who show-runner, Russel T. Davies, has expressed great interest in expanding the franchise with spin-offs. Previously, when Davies show ran back in the early 2000s he oversaw two Doctor Who spin-offs. The first was The Sarah Jane Adventures which was aimed at younger audiences. While the other spin-off, Torchwood, was aimed at more mature audiences. Both The Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood ended not long after Davies left Doctor Who. Now that Davies has returned as show-runner following a lengthy break, more spin-offs are expected.
In Doctor Who, UNIT, or Unified Intelligence Taskforce, is a military science organization that has allied with the Doctor for decades. UNIT was first introduced in the late 1960s and had a strong presence on the show in the 1970s. It has appeared sporadically since then. UNIT and Jemma Redgrave last appeared in the 2022 special episode The Power of The Doctor. Doctor Who will return later this year with three specials celebrating the shows 60th anniversary.
