Disney’s upcoming Zorro reboot is gaining steam as it hired former Game of Thrones writer, Bryan Cogman to write the show. Additionally, Cogman will be executive producing and more importantly serve as the showrunner for the series. Cogman worked on all eight seasons of David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’s HBO hit fantasy drama television series, Game of Thrones, having served as a producer, and written eleven episodes during his tenure. Furthermore, Cogman consulted on Amazon’s The Rings of Power and wrote the upcoming The Sword in the Stone remake for Disney.

This Zorro reboot has been in the works since late 2021. Wilmer Valderrama is set to produce and star in the show. Valderrama described the series as a “compelling period piece but told in a modern telenovela style,” (via Deadline). Valderrama is best known for his role as Fez in That 70’s Show — and its recent sequel series That 90’s Show — and currently portrays Special Agent Nicholas Torres on NCIS.

Gary Marsh and John Gertz will also serve as the executive producers of the Zorro series.

Background on Zorro

Zorro was first created in 1919 and has gone on to have many adaptations including a show from Disney in the 1950s and most recently 2005s The Legend of Zorro. The character is the alter ego of Don Diego de la Vega, the son of a wealthy landowner. And as Zorro, he fights crimes and protects the innocents. Zorro serves as a template and inspiration for many comic book characters including Batman.
