Amazon’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith reboot TV series of the 2005 film has now added Michaela Coel, John Turturro, and Paul Dano to their respective cast. This series has been quietly developing since February 2021 where Phoebe Waller-Bridge was initially set to co-star alongside Donald Glover. Waller-Bridge has since been replaced by Maya Eskrine.
Fresh off the success of The Batman, Dano & Turturro may actually share screen time this time around (They did not in The Batman). Michaela Coel most recently made noise writing, directing, and starring in the HBO Max series I May Destroy You. This Mr. and Mrs. Smith series seems to be finally coming together with most of their principal cast now in place.
The original 2005 film was a moderate success directed by Doug Liman. Most notably bringing together mega stars Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Mr. and Mrs. Smith overall received a generally positive critical reception. The questionable audience score definitely makes one wonder who exactly was demanding this film be remade. However, I think it may more so be the matter of an exciting premise than fond nostalgia of the film.
Donald Glover has definitely proven he is talented enough in his Emmy award winning series Atlanta. Seeing as he co-created Mr. and Mrs. Smith with showrunner Francesca Sloane, this could definitely be a pleasant surprise.
