The Star Wars universe is filled with hundreds of memorable characters, from the famed Luke Skywalker to Max Rebo and Babu Frik, there’s someone for everyone to love! My personal favorite character from a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away is the main protagnosit of the hit RPG game Knights of the Old Republic: Revan.

Revan in knights of the Old Republic, 2003.

When the game came out in 2003, my dad was showing me the Original Trilogy for the first time, and my household didn’t even have a video game console. It wouldn’t be until I was in college that I first met Revan. Before then, I probably couldn’t have really decided who my favorite Star Wars character was- I loved them all. But one day when I was 19 I thought to myself I need to read more, and as I found myself browsing books at Barnes & Noble, I stumbled across an entire section dedicated to Star Wars Legends stories. And I found it- “The Old Republic: Revan” by Drew Karpyshyn.

I know there’s some people that don’t like the book, but as someone who had never heard of Revan before from Star Wars lore, it was mesmerizing- to have a character from so long ago go through this epic journey to continue discovering his past, it really resonated with me personally at the time. After finishing, I wanted more of Revan and his motley crew, so I started Googling.

I bought myself a copy of the 2003 game, and found a local video game store selling an original xBox (yes, I bought the game before the console). I was struggling with school at the time, and spent every minute I could playing the game, all the while learning so much more about the Force and history of the galaxy far, far away.

The world Revan walked was so rich, and something that previously I hadn’t really experienced much with Star Wars. I mean, a fallen Jedi who would come to redeem himself by fighting his former apprentice in the Dark side to save the galaxy? Amazing! It was something I wish we would have had more of in the shows and films, and I wanted it badly. And after finishing the game, I started writing my adaptation of Knights of the Old Republic.

It was clunky and horrible with atrocious formatting. But it was mine, and it was the first teleplay I ever wrote. I loved every second of the process, along with the rewrites and forced learning to tell a solid episode of television. I was young and naive and thought maybe one day I could tell this story for Lucasfilm. Foolish of me, but it helped me to realize what I truly wanted to do with my life- tell stories.

The book and the games became my go-to Star Wars works, and I played and read them repeatedly up until my xBox died on me.

Darth Revan is rumoured to be coming to a live action Disney+ production.

Revan is my favorite character from Star Wars in part because of his complex history and continued influence on the Dark side (Darth Bane would base his Rule of Two on the teachings of Darth Revan), but also because of the personal attachment I have to the character. He gave me a direction as I thought about what I wanted for my life, and I don’t think there would have been anything else that would have helped me realize that. I was lost in the world, unsure of who I was or what I was going to do, like Revan in the first Knights of the Old Republic game, but he and the crew of the Ebon Hawk helped me find a direction.

That’s the beauty of Star Wars– each story tells a tale of fighting against insurmountable odds; about hope; about fitting in; about finding yourself. Everyone’s fighting a battle, and the stories from this galaxy far, far away offer everyone the opportunitiy to find a character they love and strive to emulate in their own lives.

May The Fourth Be With You All!
