Dexter: New Blood Episode Seven, titled “Skin of Her Teeth,” is directed by Sanford Bookstaver. Its story is written by Veronica West, Kirsa Rein & Alexandra Salerno, while its teleplay is written by West & Rein. This week, more is revealed about Harrison’s (Jack Alcott) own Dark Passenger and Dexter (Michael C. Hall) helps Angela (Julia Jones) investigate Kurt (Clancy Brown).

Plot Description

The cast continues to impress each week and is probably the best part of the show, along with the continued expansion of the lore of Dexter and his son. It seems that he doesn’t really want his son to recognize the “legacy” he shares with him. However, at the closing moments of the episode, Harrison opens up to Dexter in the best way possible. At the same time, this also confirms his own need and hunger to kill. Kurt is also kind of dealt with, but then reveals the fate of Angela’s childhood friend Iris, although twisting the details as the audience sees. The episode ends with probably the best cliffhanger in the entire series; and next week promises to be wild. This week also finally gave us our cameo from series legend John Lithgow as the Trinity Killer from Season Four, which was very interesting, to say the least.

Character Development

Dexter finally decides to tell Harrison the truth, although it seemed a little too late by the episode’s ending. Harrison also seems to want to connect to his father, albeit that he’s constantly arguing with him. He even reveals more about the night of his mother’s murder and what he actually remembers. This is extremely similar to Dexter’s mothers’ murder and his memory of it.

Debra (Jennifer Carpenter) was featured a bit less this week. However, it’s still great to see her advise Dexter in her own way, even though we’re constantly reminded how guilty Dexter still feels for Deb’s murder.

Something that also seems to be guiding him this season is being a better protector of those around him, as Dexter’s hero complex still seeps to the surface on occasion.

Other Television Elements of This Week’s Dexter: New Blood

The cinematography remains a staple of the show, and the editing is on par as well. The shots of Dexter alone are fantastic and they really add to how alone he feels sometimes throughout the season. Further, the scenes of Native traditions are exceptional, as there is one this week when the news of finding Iris’s body is delivered to her mother, and they’re just great to watch.

Final Thoughts

While “Skin of Her Teeth” lagged a couple of times in the middle of the episode, the remaining pieces of it are fantastic and the cliffhanger was completely unexpected and makes you root for Dexter that much more. The episode was substantial for the three central characters, Dexter, Harrison and Kurt, while giving audiences more on the mythos of the show and its other characters. Overall, the season continues to impress.
