This week’s episode of Hawkeye brings our duo back together in a suitably simple way. Episode 5 stars Jeremy Renner, Hailee Steinfeld, Florence Pugh, Alaqua Cox, Vera Farmiga and Tony Dalton.
Snapping Back
This week, we get to see a little more of Yelena (Florence Pugh) and how she’s tied into all of this. I really enjoyed how we got to see the aftermath of the Blip fully from the perspective of someone who was snapped. Although we saw something of this in WandaVision, I like the way it has been done here as we get a real idea of what it was like for that person.
We also get to see more of Pugh’s character, and how she is (deep down) just someone looking for her sister, and wanting that normal connection with another woman. The scene between her and Kate Bishop (Steinfeld) is funny, tense, and almost bittersweet – a glimpse into what life could be like if things had just been a little different for her, and she was able to get her girls’ night in.
We also see the aftermath of the end of Episode 4 throughout. There are lots of beautiful and heart-wrenching moments in this episode, and all of the cast does an amazing job of portraying the confusion and hurt they must feel. One particular moment comes from Clint (Renner) seeking solace from his closest friend in the only way possible. This is a sweet moment that further shows how the repercussions of Avengers: Endgame are still affecting the lives of those most closely involved and was done in a beautiful way that really shows the pain this character still feels.
Getting The Team Back Together
With our Hawkeyes seemingly going their separate ways, I was wondering how they would bring the pair back together. It is done in such a simple and fitting way that feels true to the characters. No big moments, no long drawn out speeches. Just two people who know what they’re doing (kind of) and helping out their friend.
Friendships and family are a big part of this episode, more so than others. Although we only see a little of the Barton family, we explore the relationships of the people around him. One of my favourite additions is the LARP community that the Hawkeyes have become friends with, and particularly Grills (Clayton English). It’s also interesting to see more of the relationship between Kazi (Fra Fee) and Maya (Alaqua Cox), and how deep and tense this might be. The Hawkeye world is growing, and I’m keen to see how all of these characters will interact and come together next week.
Playing the Long Game
The humour in the show is still perfect. It’s not too much and its exactly what we expect, particularly from the Tracksuit Mafia. It was used in this episode in a fantastic way that didn’t overshadow or take away from the more serious or action-filled moments. The writers have done an excellent job in keeping the balance just right.
With just one more episode to go, I’m still a little concerned about how, or if, we’ll all get the resolutions we’re looking for. After the frustratingly simple yet slick introduction to a certain character we’ve all been waiting for, we can finally see how all of the pieces might fall into place. The stories do seem to be wrapping up nicely, and there does seem to be a clear path (save for a few twists) to getting Clint Barton home for Christmas. If so, this could end up being one of the best and well-executed miniseries that Marvel has made so far, it just all depends on how we end the show next week.
