Chronicle hit theaters in the spring of 2012. I was just a mere Freshman in high school when it was released. Despite its disgraceful director and writer duo, the found footage science-fiction thriller is still an iconic part of my life.

The film stars Dane DeHaan, Alex Russell, Michael B. Jordan, Michael Kelly, Ashley Hinshaw, Anna Wood (DeHaan’s wife in real life), and Bo Peterson. The plot follows three teenagers in high school who gain telekinesis after a drunken house party. Andrew Detmer (DeHaan) loses control, accidentally killing popular student Steve Montgomery (Jordan), and is stopped from wreaking havoc by his cousin, Matt Garretty (Russell).

Since its release, the film gained cult status, and fans have wondered about any follow-up stories. None have come to light…until now.

News Details on the Chronicle Sequel

In Simon Thompson’s Forbes interview for the promotion of Disney’s Jungle Cruise, producer John Davis speaks up about a second film. He talks about the importance of the film under his production company, Davis Entertainment. “Chronicle was literally the best return on investment, any of my movies ever made. [The film’s budget is] $12 million, and it grossed $126.64 million worldwide. Then it had a huge afterlife in syndication. It’s one of the most financially successful movies in my stable.”

Below is his statement in which he talks about plans for the sequel:

We’re working on Chronicle 2 right now, and I think it’s going to be great. We’re working on it at Fox (20th Century Studios). It’s going to give us a chance to tell the story in a different way. We’re going to tell it from the female point of view. It will have been ten years since the event happened in Seattle, and a lot of it’s going to deal with fake news and real news and cover-ups. More interestingly, it’s the next generation getting these powers that are corruptive. These are young women just finishing college, they are empowered, and this is their journey. I mean, what a new and interesting story you can tell there.

The Bads vs The Goods (DeHaan and Jordan)

Of course, Josh Trank and Max Landis are unfortunate names to be attached to this first film. However, Chronicle gave us DeHaan (famous for going onto works such as The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and A Cure for Wellness); and Jordan, who has a huge filmography in the bag, including Netflix’s Love, Death & Robots Vol. 2 and Marvel Studios’ upcoming animated anthology, What If…?
