In an exclusive interview with Rotten Tomatoes, Marvel Studios co-president Kevin Feige spoke on the possibility of the symbiote Venom appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For those that don’t know, the film rights to the comic character Venom currently lay with Sony Pictures, alongside the rights to Spider-Man and all of the webslinger’s rogues gallery.

“I don’t want to obviously talk about rumors or speculation on what could happen and what couldn’t happen as it relates to any characters that Marvel Studios hasn’t brought to the screen yet. But I will say what I’ve always said, which is having been with Marvel for 20 years I wouldn’t dismiss anything. I wouldn’t rule anything out completely. When and how and where remains to be seen. Any rumor that you read online could happen anytime between tomorrow and never.” – Kevin Feige via Rotten Tomatoes

Not too long ago, people would have though Spidey appearing in live action alongisde Captain America, Iron Man, Black Panther, and the rest of the Avengers near impossible. But Feige seems to have a knack for doing the impossible. He oversaw the implementation and execution of three “phases” of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, debuting the first of twenty plus films in 2008 with Iron Man. He spearheaded a deal with a rival studio to bring one of the world’s most highly-recognized characters into the expansive universe. And now, he’s assumed full control of Marvel in all departments- comics, films, and television- to introduce the world to a multi-dimensional form of storytelling that blends between films and television shows, with tie-in comics introduced into the mix as well.

Currently, Venom/Eddy Brock is portrayed by Tom Hardy (Dunkirk, Mad Max: Fury Road), who is no stranger to comic book film adaptations, starring opposite Christian Bale in 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises as Bane. It’s been highly theorized that Venom will be taking the place of a live-action Spider-Man in Sony’s Sony Picture’s Universe of Spider-Man connected universe, which will include a Kraven the Hunter film, a Spider-Woman film helmed by Olivia Wilde (Booksmart), the upcoming Morbius, and the Venom duology, which will see the sequel, Let There Be Carnage, release later this year, which was co-written by Hardy and directed by Andy Serkis.

Venom was previously portrayed in the 2007 Spider-Man 3 by That 70s Show alum Topher Grace. The film was widely criticized, with the CGI of Venom being one of the main focal points. The character also saw a well-received arc and story wrap up recently in the comics, written by Donny Cates and drawn by Ryan Stegman. He has also been rumored for years to be a part of the MCU, as former Sony Pictures producer Amy Pascal claiming he was prior to the release of the first film in 2018.
