HBO and Sony Pictures Television’s live-action adaptation of The Last of Us has some production news announced today. In a report by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, the series will start filming in Calgary, Alberta on July 5th, 2021, as per the Director’s Guild of Canada. Principal photography will end on June 8th of next year, suggesting that shooting will last a bit over 11 months.

Fans of the horror video game series have much to anticipate from the show, so to film for nearly one year is crazy to think about. Alberta Premier Jason Kenney cited The Last of Us earlier this week as “the largest ever […] film or television production in Canadian history.”

This production news means that the series may not premiere until sometime in 2022 or most likely in 2023. We’ll see what goes on from here.

The series cast Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey earlier this February in their respective roles as Joel Miller and Ellie. In the 2013 and 2020 video game installments, the characters are played by Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson.
