Earlier today, it was reported that Mahershala Ali had been offered the role of Joel Miller in Sony Pictures Television and HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us. As of now, we have gotten even more news!

In an exclusive report by The Hollywood Reporter, Game of Thrones alumnus Bella Ramsey has officially been cast in the series as the lead female protagonist, Ellie. This is huge news. Ramsey played a pivotal role in the hit HBO fantasy series as Lyanna Mormont, a prominent ally to House Stark and the North.

In the video game series, Ellie (Ashley Johnson) is a young woman revealed to have an immunity to the Cordyceps fungus, which vastly affected the world and plunged it into a post-apocalypse. Her adoptive father Joel Miller (Troy Baker) makes the risky decision in saving her life on the organization Fireflies’ surgery table. After his tragic murder, she falls in love with another young woman, Dina (Shannon Woodward), and seeks revenge on Joel’s killer, Abigail “Abby” Anderson (Laura Bailey).

Given her performance in Game of Thrones, there is no doubt Ramsey will live up to the role that Johnson performed digitally and perhaps exceed our expectations. She is also at the right age that the character Ellie was during the events of the video games’ overall storyline. We have her full support for this role, and we cannot wait for this series to be made!

This past summer, The Last of Us Part II was met with great critical responses with its humanist themes on LGBTQ+ representation, father-daughter relationships, and trauma. HBO then greenlit production on the television adaptation this past November, with Craig Mazin (Scary Movie 34Superhero MovieThe Hangover Part IIIII, and Emmy Award-winning Chernobyl) writing and executively producing alongside Naughty Dog president Neil Druckmann. Kantemir Balagov will reportedly direct the series pilot.
