Earlier last month, Ewan McGregor announced Obi-Wan Kenobi will shoot in late spring. While this is a splendid update, fans knew nothing else about the Star Wars miniseries. Wait no longer! In a press release by Disney+, the cast roster for the upcoming project has been announced.

The Cast

Alongside McGregor as the title character and Hayden Christensen returning as Darth Vader, ten new additions will be making their way. In alphabetical order by surname, the following will be joining the series:

  • Joel Edgerton
  • Rupert Friend
  • Moses Ingram
  • O’Shea Jackson Jr.
  • Sung Kang
  • Simone Kessell
  • Kumail Nanjiani
  • Bonnie Piesse
  • Benny Safdie
  • Indira Varma

These are all appealing names in the industry today.

Edgerton had previously appeared in Star Wars‘ prequel trilogy as Luke Skywalker’s uncle, Owen Lars. The Australian actor went on to star in The Thing (2011), Zero Dark Thirty (2012), The Great Gatsby (2013), The Gift (2015), It Comes at Night (2017), and more. Piesse also starred in the prequel trilogy next to Edgerton as aunt Beru Lars.

Friend starred in Showtime’s Homeland while Ingram is known for her debut role as Jolene in last year’s Netflix miniseries, The Queen’s Gambit. Jackson debuted in Universal Pictures’ Straight Outta Compton (2015) then appeared in Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019). Kang is best known for his performance as Han Lue in the Fast & Furious franchise.

Nanjiani has appeared in projects such as HBO’s Silicon Valley or Amazon’s The Big Sick (2017). He will star in Marvel’s Eternals later this year. Safdie is well-known for directing films Good Time (2017) and Uncut Gems (2019) with his brother Josh Safdie. He has also appeared in Netflix’s Pieces of a Woman (2020).

Kessell has made various television appearances and several film roles. Meanwhile, Varma starred in HBO’s Game of Thrones and will go on to appear in Mission: Impossible 7. (Her GoT co-star Pedro Pascal plays the titular protagonist in The Mandalorian.)

Series Details, As of Now

The series was officially announced during the D23 Expo event in August 2019. Filming was put on hold last January due to rewrites. Later in late-2020, Hayden Christensen was revealed to reprise his role as the Sith Lord, Darth Vader (formerly Anakin Skywalker). Although set a decade after Episode III, the series may return to the Clone Wars via flashbacks, with Temuera Morrison possibly returning as Clone Marshall Commander Cody.

Officially titled Obi-Wan Kenobi on the Star Wars website, the series is set to feature “the rematch of the century” between Kenobi and Skywalker. No details so far for most of the cast members, although Carmen Cuba is the casting director behind these above decisions.

Deborah Chow will direct upcoming episodes of the show.
