Cynthia Erivo joins the cast of Disney’s Pinocchio, set to play the Blue Fairy.
The Harriet star officially signed on, according to TheWrap, joining Tom Hanks as Geppetto. Also cast in the live-action remake of the 1940 classic are Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Keegan-Michael Key. Lorraine Bracco was announced to voice a character created for the remake- Sofia the Seagull.
Ainsworth has been cast to voice Pinocchio while Gordon-Levitt has signed on to voice the real boy’s companion and adviser Jiminy Cricket. Keegan-Michael Key will voice Honest John, the charismatic fox con artist.
Erivo will take to the small screens once more on March 21st in Nat Geo’s Genius: Aretha, portraying the late singer and actress Aretha Franklin. Previously, the The Outsider star lent her voice to the Dreamwork Animation series Boss Baby: Back In Action for Netflix.
The upcoming Pinocchio remake is co-written by Chris Weitz and director Rob Zemeckis, and will start up production in April in the U.K. Though no release date has been set yet, the film is expected to release on Disney+, the Mouse House’s newest streaming platform.
The 1940 animated classic Pinocchio follows the puppet-turned-real boy Pinocchio on a journey to find is way home, back to his maker Geppetto. Guided by his cricket companion, Jiminy Cricket, Pinocchio finds himself getting into trouble after being brought to Pleasure Island by the con artist fox Honest John.
