Brendan Fraser Joins Darren Aronofsky’s ‘The Whale’ At A24.

First exclusively reported at DiscussingFilm, Darren Aronofsky is set to develop an adaptation of Samuel D. Hunter’s “The Whale” for A24. Aronofsky, known for films such as Requiem for a DreamBlack Swan, and mother!, will be writing the screenplay for the adaptation.

The stageplay follows a 600 pound man that is slowly eating himself to death while he hides away from the world. Ultimately, the man is given a new lease on life. “The Whale” has won numerous theatrical awards including the 2013 Lucille Lortel Award for Best Play and 2013 GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding New York Theatre, as well as earned nominations for many more.

According to DiscussingFilm’s report, Aronofsky and A24 are aiming to begin production on the film in April of 2021. it will also be produced by Jeremy Dawson of American Empirical Pictures. AEP’s more recent productions include The French DispatchThe Grand Budapest Hotel, and The Fantastic Mister Fox.

Following DiscussingFilm’s exclusive report of the film, Deadline reported that Bendan Fraser (Doom PatrolThe Mummy) has signed on to star in the film. They also offered a quote from playwright Samuel D. Hunter, reading,

“Adapting my play into a screenplay has been a real labor of love for me. This story is deeply personal and I’m very thankful it will have the chance to reach a wider audience. I’ve been a fan of Darren’s ever since I saw Requiem for a Dream when I was a college freshman writing my first plays, and I’m so grateful that he’s bringing his singular talent and vision to this film.” – via Deadline

Aronofsky will be returning to a feature production for the first time since his 2017 mother! starring Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings PlaybookX-Men: First Class). Brendan Fraser has seen a well-deserved return to Hollywood after following a years-long hiatus brought on by numerous personal issues. The actor has most recently appeared in DC and HBO Max’s Doom Patrol and Professionals. The Whale marks the first time that Brendan Fraser and Darren Aronofksy team up, creating a powerhouse duo.
