Disney+‘s The Mandalorian returns with its second season premiere episode titled “Chapter 9: The Marshal,” written and directed by series creator Jon Favreau.
Minor spoilers ahead for those who have not yet seen this episode or episodes of the previous season. If you have not yet done so, get to that now, then return to this article when you can!
Disney Plus‘s hit space western series returns with a great story. The Season 2 premiere follows the Mandalorian, Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal), as he seeks out the rest of his people. He retrieves information from Gor Koresh (John Leguizamo), who gives him a lead in Tatooine. Upon returning to the sand planet, Mando entrusts his ship once again with mechanic Peli Motto (Amy Sedaris) and travels to the village Mos Pelgo, where he meets a man wearing Mandalorian armor known as the town’s marshal, Cobb Vanth (Timothy Olyphant).
The episode delves into a theme of cooperation as a collective society, and on a sand planet very reminiscent of Frank Herbert’s Dune, we could tell why this feels so relevant. The krayt dragon plaguing both the villagers and the Tusken raiders is similar to Herbert’s sandworm and setting up bait to lure the creature in feels the same as how Dune uses thumpers to catch the worms.
When it is evident that the villagers and the raiders do not like each other very well, Mando gets both people to work together in order to take down their common enemy, as he believes that “joining forces is their only hope.” In our sociopolitical climate, I believe this is what we all need to learn. There are worse things out in the world to pick battles with than each other. In the case of the Tatooine inhabitants, collaboration is possible albeit difficult.
Overall, the season is off to a lovely start. With some allusions to Return of the Jedi — including an “abandoned Sarlacc pit” and the destruction of the second Death Star — we can see a build-up of what’s to come. Temuera Morrison’s return as the legendary bounty hunter Boba Fett is teased, and we just cannot wait for him to be a part of the show’s story. In addition, the musical scoring and action sequences of the series are as excellent as usual. Make no mistake about them!
The Mandalorian Season 2 is now available to watch, so begin with the premiere episode or wait to binge the other episodes in the near future!
