Taking a break from the action, Stargirl returns with a much more heartfelt episode about what it means to truly be “good” or “evil”. In this episode we watch the origin of Brainwave given to us through tapes Henry Jr. is watching that his father had stored in his secret closet. Meanwhile the Whitmore-Dugan household has an awkward family dinner with the Mahkent’s that ends with a chilling reveal.

The Origin of Brainwave:

Honestly after watching the way Henry Sr. used to be from his tapes he left, I was actually way more fond of his character then his previous appearances. This series has done a great job at showing stereotypes of certain characters that we expect to see, but adds another layer on top of those in a sense twisting those stereotypes. Henry King was no different as we get to actually see(or hear from him) how he was pushed around a lot before he ever got his powers. Through these tapes we also begin to see how Henry Jr. might want to even tip himself towards the dark side. After hearing all the negative thoughts from everyone around him Henry Jr. begins to snap just like his dad and viewers are left wondering if he will become just like his father. Especially after that cliffhanger of the lawyer dying I personally don’t know if he’s going to be a good guy or be a bad guy. I’m very curious to see how Henry reacts to his son having inherited his powers and if he is going to want to protect him from the rest of the ISA or force him to join them.

An Awkward Dinner:

I think we are all in agreement that was probably one of the most intense dinner scenes ever in film and television? It was great seeing so many of our main characters share the screen together as it doesn’t feel like we have gotten much of that outside of the JSA and ISA characters together. Watching this scene really continued to highlight that there isn’t really that big a difference between the JSA and the ISA. Both sides just want to protect their family even if by doing that they achieve that through different means.

Final Thoughts:

Never would I have ever thought we would have gotten to see Green Arrow and Speedy in their classic outfits as a part of the Seven Soldiers of Victory. I love how true to the comics this show is while also modernizing the source material. Elsewhere in the episode we had Janitor Justin hallucinate the Cosmic Staff as a mop and I thought that scene was just very well shot. Even though it wasn’t too big a moment of the episode I am excited we got to see even just a little of him in it. In addition it was great seeing Beth and Rick share the screen together as their one screen chemistry is always great to see. With season 1 coming to an end in just only 4 more weeks/episodes I am still just as excited as I was in the beginning for the rest of the season.

Score:9.6/10
