Jermaine Clement’s What We Do in the Shadows returns with a new season full or more laughs and a new story.

The Season 2 premiere episode is titled “Resurrection;” it is directed by Kyle Newacheck (Workaholics, Community, “The Worst Guys”), and written by Marika Sawyer.

Some spoilers ahead for those who have not yet watched the episode or seen the show. If you haven’t done either, you should get to that now, then return to this article!

The season continues from the previous. Vampires Nandor the Relentless (Kayvan Novak), Laszlo Cravensworth (Matt Berry), and Nadja (Natasia Demetriou) are hunted down by assassins of the Staten Island Council. A summer has passed, and Laszlo and Nadja have gone over several familiars. While mourning the loss of their most recent one, Topher (Haley Joel Osment), they decide to bring him back to life rather than bury him.

This first episode of the second season premiere also brings in actor Benedict Wong as its necromancer and quite a hilarious one at that. He doesn’t care too much for those he provides a service to, and he can be rather a con artist to the show’s vampires.

The best character development is Nandor’s familiar Guillermo (Harvey Guillén), who continues to cope with his Van Helsing lineage while putting up with the vampires’ ridiculousness. He doesn’t get nearly as much credit for the work he does. Perhaps one day he’ll be discovered for the loyalty he has always shown.
