Arguably one of the most anticipated app launches of 2020, the brainchild of Film Producer Jefferey Katzenberg, Quibi spent nearly half a billion dollars on marketing their short form, mobile-only, streaming service.

Described as “The next generation of storytelling” by the developers, Quibi offers both original and rebooted shows broken up into ten-minute episodes debuting every week. Quibi came swinging out of the gate with both big-name celebrities in the likes of Chrissy Teigen, Liam Hemsworth, and Christoph Waltz, as well as big-name shows, including a reboot of Punk’d hosted by Chance The Rapper (or Mr. The Rapper as he refers to himself in his Quibi ad).

A former chairman of Walt Disney Studios, Katzenberg would undoubtedly be looking to compete with Disney’s immediate success when launching their streaming service Disney Plus. However, according to Variety, Quibi amassed just 7.5% of Disney’s first-day downloads. Managing roughly 300,000 compared to the 4 million of Katzenberg’s former employer.

While first-day downloads are not always a sign of what’s to come, it will be interesting to see how Quibi manages to navigate the competitive market of online streaming.

What do you think? Will Quibi be a success or will they fall short of the big-name competitors of Netflix, Hulu, and Disney? Let us know down below and don’t forget to follow The Cinema Spot on Twitter (@thecinemaspot) and Instagram (@thecinemaspot_).
