Last summer’s version of Child’s Play showed a new take on the killer doll narrative. While it wasn’t anything award-winning, it wasn’t terrible either.

After nearly two years in development, a television series titled Chucky has been ordered at Syfy. This was announced by NBCUniversal at the Television Critics Association press tour. The show will focus on the eponymous evil red-haired, freckle-faced children’s doll possessed by the soul of infamous serial killer Charles Lee Ray, or Chucky.

Franchise creator Don Mancini will run the show with the help of television writer-producer Nick Antosca and long-time franchise producer David Kirschner. Mancini has written the screenplays for all the films except for last year’s reboot — which he personally resents — and is signed on to direct the show’s pilot episode.

President of USA and Syfy Chris McCumber speaks on bringing the killer doll to small screens worldwide:

The character Don and David created has terrified audiences for over 30 years. The longevity and legacy of Chucky speaks to the creative storytelling and the loyal fans the film series has collected over the years. We are excited to once again partner with Nick and UCP on this new Syfy series, and are incredibly proud to bring Chucky to television for the first time with the original creators.

The series will take place in a suburban town. Deadline provides a synopsis:

In the new Chucky television series, after a vintage Chucky doll turns up at a suburban yard sale, an idyllic American town is thrown into chaos as a series of horrifying murders begin to expose the town’s hypocrisies and secrets. Meanwhile, the arrival of enemies — and allies — from Chucky’s past threatens to expose the truth behind the killings, as well as the demon doll’s untold origins as a seemingly ordinary child who somehow became this notorious monster.

The last time we’ve seen Chucky the killer doll was in The Cult of Chucky (2017). He broke into a mental institution with multiple Chucky dolls and possessed handicapped Nica Pierce, whose family he has terrorized sometime before putting his soul into the doll. Nica-Chucky escaped with the help of his partner-in-crime Tiffany and her possessed Tiffany doll.

Meanwhile, adult Andy Barclay, a long-time victim and enemy of Chucky, was locked in one of the institution’s cells, and his former foster sister Kyle enters his home to torture the severed head of the original Chucky doll.

With news of the series to finally air on television, horror fans might just see familiar faces such as the Pierces, the Barclays, and his family Tiffany and Glen and/or Glenda. Who knows? We may even get the return of Kristen de Silva from Child’s Play 3 (1991) and Jesse and Jade from The Bride of Chucky (1998).
