Don’t give up quite yet for future installments in the Scream franchise. Hope shimmers for the possibility that series star Neve Campbell could potentially return. The news broke exclusively yesterday at Variety. The report contains a conversation about Campbell’s possible return to the franchise during a BAFTA Tea event.

Neve Campbell had previously left the Scream franchise in June 2022 over a pay dispute with Paramount. The actor said she would return as her legacy character, Sydney Prescott, “under the right circumstances.” Campbell has starred as Sydney since the franchise began in 1996.

The State of Scream 7 As of Now

The current fate of Scream 7 is uncertain, seeing that the sequel’s new leads and director are no longer attached to the project. Melissa Barrera was fired over her social media comments on Israel’s genocide of Palestinians. Shortly after, Jenna Ortega exited the project pre-production due to her scheduling conflicts with Netflix’s Wednesday series and Beetlejuice 2. More recently, the then-current director—Christopher Landon—assigned to the seventh film exited due to the ongoing turmoil in which the franchise finds itself.

These movies mean a lot to us and they mean a lot to the fans. I go to these conventions sometimes and I meet the fans and they’re frantic about these films. They love them. These films mean a lot to them and these characters mean a lot to them. So even for their sake, I would love to see it continue.

Time will only tell what will come of a seventh installment in the series. Paramount could opt for a reboot, but that had tried that once with the MTV Scream television series that first aired in 2015. However, returning to a Sydney Prescott-led film following what happened in the last two films would be impactful. Only time will tell if Neve Campbell reprises her iconic role or if the studio executives will finally let Prescott get her happy ending.
