The 1995 Michael Mann film Heat is moving forward with a sequel nearly thirty years after its release. The nail-biting action crime thriller film originally starred Robert De Niro as Neil McCauley, and rumors of a sequel have existed for some time. The film is rumored to follow the novelization released by Mann in August 2022 after it became a number-one New York Times best seller. On top of all this, the rumor is that Adam Driver is in talks to star as young Neil McCauley.

Heat originally featured other celebrities such as Al Pacino as Lieutenant Vincent Hanna and Val Kilmer as Chris Shiherlis. The film was initially a hit and is seen as a staple within the crime genre. The sequel has gone around the rumor mill a few times, but recently is leaving rumors behind and soon becoming a new feature film.

Both Warner Bros. and Michael Mann have yet to comment on this matter.

Deadline reports that Warner Bros. is negotiating to help fund the film and its production. New Regency helped fund the original movie in the 1990s and could also be given a chance to finance the sequel. Mann is the main person currently attached and propelling the project forward.

Novelization Leads to an Adaptation

The 2022 novel Heat 2, by Michael Mann and Meg Gardiner, tells the story of events before and after the original film. It follows the film’s primary characters in two timelines, and this is where the talks and names of actors arise. Fans are wondering which of the original cast will return. The portion of the story after the film builds on the fallout of the events in the original movie. However, the talks of Adam Driver involve the 1988 storyline that sees heists along the West Coast, the U.S.-Mexico border, and Chicago.

Adam Driver is the primary name thrown around due to his appearance in Mann’s upcoming film, Ferrari. Also, once Ferrari hits theaters, Mann can move forward with the potential Heat sequel. Another big name currently rumored to be starring is Ana de Armas as McCauley’s 1988 love interest.
