Something about me? I have been a nerdy cinephile for as long as I can remember. Putting the two together is living my best life. That notwithstanding, I was born to express, not to impress, so I blog because I don't have friends. In other news, I like hashtags because they look like waffles, prefer my puns intended, and I always give 100% unless I'm donating blood. Thanks for reading.

If you have become a Frank Herbert enthusiast since Dune hit screens nearly a year ago, you know Dune: The Sisterhood has landed a prequel series on HBO Max. After a tenable search, the leading matriarchs of House Harkonnen have been found–Emily Watson and Shirley Henderson.

Watson (God’s Creatures, Chernobyl) and Henderson (Harry Potter, Bridget Jones franchises) will star in Dune: The Sisterhood as Valya and Tula Harkonnen, respectively. They hold considerable sway in Frank Herbert’s saga as 10,000 years prior to Paul Atreides’ ascension as “God Emperor of Dune,” they created the Sisterhood of Rossack.

That’s important because that was the genesis of the sacrosanct order, the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood.

Based on the novel, “Sisterhood of Dune” by Frank’s son, Brian Herbert, and Kevin J. Anderson, we will learn the depths of secrecy and bond of allegiance these women took in the Dune universe to control the bloodlines of both House Harkonnen and House Atreides to develop the Kwisatz Haderach.

Along with Jon Spaihts, Scott Z. Burns, Matthew King, John Cameron, Cait Collins, and Alison Schapker, Denis Villeneuve will be executive producing this series for HBO Max. Schapker will serve as co-showrunner as well. That is a gift to many fans who adored his vision of the conflict for the Spice Melange.

According to the official logline, the pilot will unravel:

Following the Harkonnen Sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind, and establish the fabled sect known as the Bene Gesserit

Dune: The Sisterhood

Villeneuve has long been a fan of the mercurial order of telepathic witches, back when Dune was being made, this prequel was ordered back in 2019. He clearly loves the subject matter, so with his oversight, this is going to be some must-see binging!

At the helm of this anticipated series is Diane Ademu-John, who serves as creator, writer, and co-showrunner, and also has an executive producer nod. (Come to think of it, how many people does it take to produce a series “executively?”) Her production quality has been featured with the FOX TV series Empire, as well as NBC’s Medium and the celebrated Netflix horror series The Haunting of Bly Manor.

The keep the consistency of canon, Villeneuve is repeating his offer to keep the Herbert estate involved in the production. Representing the visionary will be Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt, and Kim Herbert.

If you want to catch up on the subject matter, check out Dune: The Sisterhood or Mentats of Dune to learn more about the Sisterhood of Rossack and House Harkonnen’s involvement. And, in case you need a reminder, Dune: Part One won six Academy Awards and received nominations for four more, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. So, yeah, this will be fantastic as well!

Call it a witchy premonition.
