Following last week’s episode of Jemaine Clement’s What We Do in the Shadows Season 4, fans of FX’s hit comedy fantasy-horror television series get the moment they have been waiting for… but is it the moment? The sixth episode of the fourth season is titled, “The Wedding”. It is written by Sam Johnson, Sarah Naftalis, Marika Sawyer, and Paul Simms and is directed by Tig Fong.

In this review, I will be discussing What We Do in the Shadows Season 4 Episode 6. There will be spoilers here, as the title of this article suggests. Nonetheless, please read ahead at your own discretion.

Editor’s Note: In writing this review, I have seen the first nine of ten episodes of the series’s fourth season to properly understand the wider context of the season’s narrative.

Discussion

One of the shorter episodes of What We Do in the Shadows Season 4, “The Wedding” features the return of a few familiar faces — Baron Afanas (Doug Jones), vampire hunter-turned-vampire Derek (Chris Sandiford), and Staten Island residents, Sean (Anthony Atamanuik) and Charmaine (Marissa Jaret Winokur). Fox’s production design and Wylie’s set decoration make for a lovely wedding. With Montgomery’s costume designs, Milk’s makeup, and Harrod’s hair allow for the most magnificent moments of the series to date.

However, I personally did not enjoy the episode as much as I had anticipated. Viewers of the show were teased a wedding since the promotion for the fourth season started… but how long do we think the marriage between Nandor the Relentless (Kayvan Novak) and Marwa (Parisa Fakhri) will last? Be honest with yourself here. The series does not give enough spotlight to the last of Nandor’s wives for us to care about her. As the episodes pass by every week, I wanted to feel something, or rather feel for her to some degree. Not to mention all the futile wishes that Nandor uses up on her, the last wish of which involves her taking an interest in everything that he does.

While there is nothing much to spoil about the episode since the major giveaway is in the title itself, I do want to highlight something that I have been discussing for the past few episodes: Nandor and his familiar-turned-vampire hunter-turned-bodyguard-turned-nightclub accountant, Guillermo de la Cruz (Harvey Guillén).

The Floating Ship

Not long ago, in my review of What We Do in the Shadows Season 4 Episode 4, “The Night Market”, I briefly mentioned the changing dynamic between Nandor and Guillermo. In the third episode, Nandor goes the extra lengths (no pun intended) to make sure his wife is satisfied with his body, and he attempts this again in the fifth episode. In “The Night Market”, Nandor deliberately wishes for Marwa to not join the group at the market… so what does that mean for the fan-favorite relationship?

We are four seasons into the show now and are still given hints at this notion that Nandor will romantically end up with Guillermo as a partner. In my review of “The Night Market”, I did say we will encounter ironies along the way. In the “Private School” episode, the group debates over whom is paired up to pose as Child Colin Robinson’s (Mark Proksch) parents. Only briefly do we see Nandor and Guillermo in the front seat. Otherwise, the rest of the pairings has become a joke in the montage of the situation. There, Nandor and Guillermo both make remarks about being jealous that one is with another.

In this week’s episode, we see every character making objections to the marriage. That is, with the exception of Guillermo. Why does he not say anything about the marriage between Nandor and Marwa? If you are curious as to what may happen with the remaining four episodes of the season, then you might just want to wait a bit longer. An upcoming episode does provide some answers, including who is on the other end of Guillermo’s secret little phone conversations. Although, again, we would need to endure the ironies that the writers throw at us first before the ship can get hit with a cool breeze.

The Cast of What We Do in the Shadows

Kayvan Novak, Matt Berry, and Natasia Demetriou portray the series’ three primary traditional vampires, Nandor the Relentless, Leslie “Laszlo” Cravensworth, and Nadja of Antipaxos, respectively.

Harvey Guillén portrays Guillermo de la Cruz, Nandor’s familiar-turned-vampire hunter-turned bodyguard. Mark Proksch appears as Baby Colin Robinson. Kristen Schaal plays series regular/ special guest star, The Guide.

Doug Jones guest stars as Baron Afanas. Marissa Jaret Winokur and Anthony Atamanuik portray Charmaine and Sean, the vampires’ human next-door neighbors, respectively. Chris Sandiford plays Derek, a human-turned-vampire acquaintance of Guillermo’s.

Anoop Desai plays Djinn, while Parisa Fakhri plays Marwa.

Louis Adams plays a chef, while Leeann Ball appears as a vampire woman. Peter Bou-Ghannam and Aida Keykhaii appear as Marwa’s father and mother, respectively. Chris Mark plays The Sire and is voiced by Jean-Michel Richaud.

Performances and Character Developments

I do not believe we give enough credit to Djinn for putting up with Nandor’s absurd wishes. While the character did state that he is not one to judge another individual’s stupid desires, I still thought that Nandor would at least be mindful. Then again, this is What We Do in the Shadows, and we cannot afford to be completely serious about what goes on in the show. Desai has been putting on a straight face for the past several episodes, and my goodness, I do not know how he goes through it all. Djinn does give the vampire a smaller lamp that will only grant him three wishes, and if he has learned anything from his first fifty wishes… good luck to him.

Novak and Guillén both depict such a hectic duo to panic over a wedding for a temporary wedding, and I haven’t seen anything like this since the final season of How I Met Your Mother. Nandor believes someone is out to sabotage his wedding, but I do not know why that is. Meanwhile, we have Guillermo pulling strings whenever and wherever he can, but he is only human. If I learned anything crucial about the next three episodes, then, well… stay tuned for something hopeful. This is a frustrating ride, but we are all in it together, right?

Final Thoughts on What We Do in the Shadows Season 4 Episode 6

This episode of What We Do in the Shadows might not progress the narrative in the ways that it wants to, but it does hint at a shift in the relationship between Novak and Guillén’s characters. The final scene with Nandor tending to a sleeping Guillermo (with Child Colin having drawn a penis on his forehead) is both heartfelt and hilarious. This ship has become all the more evident in this season, and to deny so means you have not been paying much attention. The next three episodes of Season 4 are the best, in my opinion, with next week’s bringing Atamanuik’s third appearance in the season in a row. Overall, while I would not necessarily consider it the weakest of the season, “The Wedding” is fascinating for what it is, and it is whatever you make of it.
