In a report by Deadline, Netflix has staked its teen vampire drama, First Kill, after one season.

The LGBTQ+ supernatural coming-of-age drama starred Imani Lewis and Sarah Catherine Hook as star-crossed lovers, Juliette (Hook) and Calliope (Lewis), descendants from families who are sworn rivals. Juliette comes from a family of day-walking vampires, while Calliope is from a bloodline of famed monster hunters. The supernatural coming-of-age drama was one of the few to feature queer characters in prominent roles. The series was created and executive produced by Felicia D. Henderson, who worked with author V.E. Schwab, to expand the world of the original short story on which the series was based. Schwab also served as a writer and executive producer of the series.

The show made its debut back in June and spent a week in the streamer’s top ten rankings. Henderson spoke with The Daily Beast about her frustration with how the series was promoted.

The art for the initial marketing was beautiful. I think I expected that to be the beginning and that the other equally compelling and important elements of the show—monsters vs. monster hunters, the battle between two powerful matriarchs, etc.—would eventually be promoted, and that didn’t happen.

Be that as it may, Henderson seems to ultimately support Netflix’s decision to end First Kill due to the show’s lackluster performance.

They licensed the IP, paid for a pilot script, and gave it a healthy production budget. The creative team was very supportive when we were shooting the show under harrowing conditions—before there were ‘vaccines for all’ in Atlanta, a very overcrowded production hub.

In addition to Hook and Lewis, the series also starred  Elizabeth Mitchell, Aubin Wise, Jason Robert Moore, Gracie Dzienn, Will Swenson, Phillip Mullings Jr., Dominic Goodman, and Dylan McNamara.
