Christopher Paolini’s fantasy novel, Eragon, is getting a second chance at being adapted thanks to Disney Plus. In an exclusive report by Variety, the streamer is currently developing a television series based on the wildly popular first book in Paolini’s The Inheritance Cycle series.

Bert Salke is set to executive produce Eragon under his production shingle, Co-Lab 21 with 20th Television. Paolini will write and co-executive produce the series as well. The television project is currently searching for a showrunner.

Statements from the Executive Producers

Via Twitter, Paolini had this to say about the upcoming Eragon project:

This has been a long time coming. I can’t tell you how many conversations, meetings, and messages were needed in order to reach this point. And we’re still just at the beginning! However, none of this would have been possible without everyone who has read the books, supported the tweetstorms, and participated in this fandom over the years. So a huge thank you from me to every Alagaësian out there. You brought the thunder.

Salke also adds his statement on Disney+’s Eragon:

It’s thrilling to be working with Christopher on a Disney + adaptation of ‘Eragon’. Like with Percy Jackson, 20th and D+ are providing a chance for us to translate these stories to film in the way their millions of fans deserve. We’re incredibly excited to find the showrunner/partner who will help us bring the Eragon story to screens around the world.

Background on Eragon

Eragon was originally self-published in 2002 and acquired by the traditional publisher, Knopf, in 2003. The novel tells the story of a farm boy who discovers a dragon egg, and realizes he’s a member of the new generation of legendary Dragon Riders. Three sequels, Eldest, Brisingr, and Inheritance, followed. An adaptation starring Jeremy Irons was released in 2006, and was, unfortunately, a critical and commercial failure.

Have you seen the 2006 film? If so, then what are your thoughts on it so far? Are you excited about the Disney+ series? Let us know! For more Eragon updates as well as fantasy-related news and reviews, do not forget to follow The Cinema Spot on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram!
