There is no denying that I was an American Girl Doll child. I am a lover of history and hairbows, and the AG brand basically catered right to me. The American Girl dolls are in the middle of a renaissance right now. The “we need an American Girl doll who” memes are taking over the internet, and it is my job to contribute more chaos to the mix.

Samantha Parkington

Samantha Parkington is a turn-of-the-century girlie. She is bold, mischievous, and a little bit nosy. Because of her status in society, she can sometimes be a little naive about the real world. Samantha’s favorite movie is none other than Lady Bird. Although these ladies are from different generations and financial statuses, Samantha and Lady Bird are kind of cut from the same mold.

Kirsten Larson

Kirsten Larson came to the United States from Sweden. Initially, she finds it hard to fit in as an American. She appreciates the little things but has a wild imagination. This imagination causes her to escape to the woods and daydream about living a giddy life. I think Kirsten’s favorite movie would be Labyrinth. Jim Henson’s fantasy would be an escape for her when life gets to be overwhelming. Kirsten sees herself in Sarah, and she might not go as far as wising the Goblin King would take her brother; she’d love the dramatics of the fantasy life.

Molly McIntire

World War II highly inconveniences Molly McIntire. She is selfish over the idea of her dad going to aid the soldiers. When Molly’s family takes in a girl from England named Emily, she finally realizes the weight of the war on the world. Much like Kirsten, Molly is prone to big ideas and daydreams. She loves to tap dance and even goes to the theater more than once to watch Girl Crazy and study Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland’s tap moves. Molly’s favorite movie would be La La Land. A modern homage to old Hollywood.

Felicity Merriman

Felicity Merriman lived during the Revolutionary War. She is being pulled in different directions to become a proper young lady, but all she wants to do is live her life the way she desires. Often expressing her distaste for being an honorable lady and the lack of freedom women have. She is headstrong and actively goes after what she wants. Felicity’s favorite movie would be Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. Donna Sheridan is an icon in Felicity’s eyes. Donna’s carefree nature and desire to see the world are everything Felicity could dream of. Not to mention that they both have a soft spot for horses.

Addy Walker

Aduke “Addy” Walker is a Civil War-era gal. She escapes her life of enslavement in the south with her mother, and the pair ends up in Philadelphia, free of their old life. Addy’s biggest dream is to reunite with her entire family in Philadelphia. She is a practical child but can also be wistful and long for a life of extravagance. Addy would favor Rodger’s & Hammerstein’s Cinderella, starring Brandy as Cinderella.

Josefina Montoya

Josefina Montoya is a gentle soul. Unlike the dolls before her, she considers herself on the shy side. However, she is humorous and has a great love for music. She lived outside Santa Fe on a rancho under Mexican rule during her childhood. Josefina dreams of becoming a healer like her Tía Magdalena. Her most loved movie would be Amélie. Josefina recognizes a similar tenacity in herself that Amélie has.

These movie picks are my opinion and reflect some of my favorite movies, along with each doll’s personality. Do you agree/disagree with my choices? I’d love to hear what movie you think each AG would love. Who knows, maybe I’ll even dive into the other historical girls eventually.
