Ahoy, me hearties!! Today marks the day when HBO Max renewed the hit series Our Flag Means Death for season 2! As the most in-demand breakout series in the US for 7 weeks running, it was a shock that it took so long for the news to be announced. But earlier today, the good news was finally announced. And, with one of the main attractions of the show being the genuine and fun representations of queer people and queer relationships, it would make sense that this announcement would come at the start of Pride Month.
A Love Story
Season one of Our Flag Means Death was created by show runner David Jenkins and executive producer Taika Waititi. It was released in March 2022 and received widespread acclaim. The story follows an unlikely band of buccaneers as they try to live life on the open seas. Their Captain, Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby), is a pampered, gentleman of leisure who sells up to pursue the pirate life. On his adventures, he meets Blackbeard (Taika Waititi), and the two form an unlikely friendship.
After many adventures and some mutinous murmurings, the two find they are unable to hide their feelings. They confess their love for each other, and then fans of the show were left with one of the most heartbreaking cliffhangers ever.
What Makes You Happy
It isn’t just our charismatic captains that have stolen the hearts of fans worldwide! It’s also the crew that sails with them. Jim (Vico Ortiz) and Oluwande (Samson Kayo) are beautiful together, and everyone loves them. Lucious (Nathan Foad) is the friend everyone needs when they’re going through a break-up (or at any point in their life). And Izzy ‘Hands’ (Con O’Neill) is the pirate you love to hate!
Our Flag Means Death isn’t just a fun adventure story. It’s one of the most inclusive and genuine love stories to be portrayed on TV. While we don’t have any dates for filming or release yet, we’ll be sure to bring you that glorious bounty once it’s announced.
