The recent critical and financial success of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett’s Scream is no surprise. Their fifth installment of Wesley “Wes” Craven’s cult classic slasher franchise introduced new ideas and brought backgrounded tropes and rules to the surface. This was due to the blessing of Spyglass Media Group and Radio Silence’s help in production as well as Paramount Pictures’ distribution of the film.

Not even one month after the 2022 film’s release, a sixth film has been greenlit.

Details

According to Aaron Couch’s news report via The Hollywood Reporter‘s Heat Vision, a follow-up to Scream (2022) has been given the go-ahead; with the current installment’s creative team coming back for the next project. Radio Silence (Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett) will return to the directors’ chairs. James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick will also pen the screenplay for the film.

Production on the as-of-now untitled sixth Scream film is set to start later this summer. Vanderbilt — under Project X Entertainment — as well as Paul Neinstein and William Sherak will produce the installment. Meanwhile long-time Scream franchise co-creator, Kevin Williamson, will executive produce the project with Chad Villella of Radio Silence and Gary Barber and Peter Oillataguerre of Spyglass.

No word on the production/costume/set designers as well as music and cinematographic crew members — as well as plot details — has been announced.

Words from the Producers and Writers of Scream

Spyglass and Paramount have made a statement on the present and future state of the franchise.

We are tremendously grateful to the fans around the world who enthusiastically received our film. We can’t wait for audiences to see what Radio Silence, writers Jamie & Guy and Project X have in store for our Woodsboro family.

Radio Silence have also issued a statement on what more they will bring to the table.

Working with such a wonderful and talented family of creators — and in the lineage Wes [Craven] and Kevin [Williamson] so expertly built — has been the thrill of a lifetime, and we’re so excited to bring the next chapter in the Scream saga to life.

Lastly, co-writers Vanderbilt and Busick have also made a statement on their involvement with the next installment.

Is this real life? Getting to collaborate once again with our friends on the next installment of the Scream story is more than we could have hoped for. We are overwhelmed that we get to continue to play in the sandbox that Kevin and Wes created. It is, as Ghostface would say, an honor.

Background on Scream (2022)

Scream (2022) revitalized Craven’s beloved franchise after canceling The Weinstein Company out of the equation. Despite challenges that it’s faced during the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, the film has accomplished in garnering over $106 million with a budget of $24 million US Dollars.

Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega star in the fifth film as sisters, Samantha “Sam” and Tara Carpenter. Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown also star as twins, Chad and Mindy Meeks-Martin.

Courteney Cox, Neve Campbell, and David Arquette reprise their roles as legacy characters Gale Weathers, Sidney Prescott, and Dwight “Dewey” Riley, respectively. As always, Roger L. Jackson voices the franchise’s iconic slasher serial killer, Ghostface.

No news on whether whom from the fifth fim’s cast will return has been announced.
