The Book of Boba Fett Episode 2 brings us more tension and more of Boba’s backstory. “Chapter 2: The Tribes of Tatooine” is directed by Steph Green and written by Jon Favreau. The episode stars Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen.

A Slow Burn for a Big Story

The latest episode of The Book of Boba Fett builds on the main story that we started in the first episode. Although, it mostly feels like we’re stuck in the flashback zone.

The action involved is great and adds a tension that keeps you invested, however, a lot of the story feels slow and distracting. I can see that they are building up to a parallel between Boba (Morrison)’s claim to being Daimyo and his rise through the Tusken ranks, but it feels slow and a little distracting at times.

The action scenes we get feel fitting to the Star Wars universe; tense, satisfying and something that keeps you hooked. The build-up to these scenes is slow, but the payoff is somewhat worthwhile. However, there is a lot in this episode that feels like it could have been left out. Despite this, the little moments of humour are also really fitting and almost unexpected. Morrison does a great job of flipping between a tense performance and deadpan delivery of lizard-related comedy.

The Tusken Way

With this episode feeling very flashback-heavy, we get a lot more insight into the Tusken tribe and how they are starting to welcome Boba Fett into their group. Their interactions are interesting and are showing the full capabilities of the characters (and the actors). I still feel like a lot of the backstory could be condensed and we could see more of the current timeline, but I also see why the backstory is important. It’s building up the deep respect and sense of loyalty that Boba Fett has, and is starting to show us why he decides to rule with respect, rather than fear. The character development is appreciated but does sometimes feel a little frustrating as it takes away from some of the stories we want to see.

A special mention is needed for the Tusken Youngling (Wesley Kimmel) and the Tusken Warrior (Joanna Bennett). They really carry the story at times and are quickly becoming fan favourites. The show is setting these two characters up to be major parts of the story, and it will be interesting to see how their characters progress with the show.

The New Kids in Town

When we do get moments in the current timeline of Boba Fett, it feels almost like a political drama rather than a sci-fi adventure series. The arrival of more problems for the new daimyo is pushing the story further, but with the arrival of these problems comes a lot of expectations. The introduction to the twins and their furry friend is setting up a show that needs to pick up its pace and consistency in order to give us a more satisfying ending.

A Beautiful Ending

Although the final act of this episode is a little bit lacking in the pacing department, the final scene is beautiful. There is a lot in the final 10 minutes that, again, might not be completely necessary (no wonder woodcarving isn’t a televised sport), but the acceptance of Boba Fett into the Tusken Tribe is a great way to finish this part of the story. It completes his arc of proving himself and gives us a glimpse into how he might progress in the future.

While the story is dragging a little bit at the moment, I’m hoping that the setup is finished and we will get more story development in the coming episodes. The main storyline is not as fleshed out as we would hope at this point in the series, but now that we have enough of the backstory, I’m hoping that we will get a bigger focus on what is to come for Boba Fett and Fennec Shand (Wen).

The Book of Boba Fett Episodes 1-2 are available to stream now on Disney+.
