Dexter: New Blood Episode Nine, titled “The Family Business,” is directed by Marcos Siega and is written by Scott Reynolds. This week, Dexter (Michael C. Hall) drops the ball and reveals all to his son Harrison (Jack Alcott). Angela (Julia Jones) continues to sleuth around with end results she probably won’t like and Kurt (Clancy Brown) learns his lesson.

Plot Summary

After we finally saw Dexter finally begin to open up more with Harrison, this episode continues that plotline and fleshes it out in the best way possible. The opening of the episode gives us another kill from the character’s past in Miami all while he details the Code to his son.

Debra (Jennifer Carpenter) is featured more during this week than she has been in the last couple of episodes, which is great. This episode features probably Carpenter’s best performance of the season and is very reminiscent of the way she was towards Dexter in the original run.

Plot Development

Dexter takes some time for himself this week as well and takes care of Elric (Shuler Hensley) while constantly contemplating his relationship with Harrison.

Also, “The Family Business” serves as another Christmas episode for Dexter! The titular protagonist uses the holiday as a way of teaching Harrison to blend in despite his own violent urges by gifting him a rifle, along with their time at Angela’s.

Kurt also pops in at the most opportune moment and seemingly foreshadows the end of the episode. Molly’s (Jamie Chung) fate is also revealed, despite Dexter’s best attempts. The cliffhanger ending is also great for the episode as Angela continues to investigate her leads; there’s only one more episode and it is bound to perhaps be one of the craziest episodes in Dexter history.

Lastly, did you catch that Star Trek reference between Dexter and Kurt?! Great stuff!

Character Developments

The relationship between Dexter and Harrison is intertwined as ever and is a great setup for what’s to come next week. Debra does well at preventing Dexter from revealing certain details of the Code and his own ritual, despite Dexter’s wanting to.

It was also revealed in an episode a few weeks ago that Kurt embalmed the bodies of his victims, with Iris probably being his first victim twenty-five years ago, and his use of them was revealed, with deranged results.

Harrison also grows closer with Audrey (Johnny Sequoyah) this week. The use of languages between Audrey and Angela is exceptional as well.

Dexter’s ego gets a nice boost from his son too.

Important Elements of This Week’s Penultimate Episode of Dexter: New Blood

Some of the best parts of the show remain to be the cinematography and editing, this week in particular. They do a fantastic job at keeping you on edge during certain scenes; one of the best shots is an overhead of Dexter and Harrison on the job. The writing continues to exceed expectations as well and keeps pace during the scenes that lag this week. The episode titles have also been terrific!

Final Thoughts

“The Family Business” is perhaps one of the best penultimate episodes in Dexter history, and Kurt is by far one of the best, and craziest, villains that the main character has ever faced. The amount of inclusion that Harrison had within the overall plot of the season was outstanding and the last episode should be nothing short of insane!
