For a while, we have known The Flash Season 8 will kick off with a 5-episode crossover event. This was announced by The CW‘s President Mark Pedowitz back in May. Today, Deadline offered us our first official details about this as a huge slew of guest stars have been announced!

Cast Details

Javicia Leslie (Ryan Wilder/Batwoman), Cress Williams (Jefferson Pierce/Black Lightning), Chyler Leigh (Alex Danvers/Sentinel), Katherine McNamara (Mia Smoak), Brandon Routh (Ray Palmer/Atom), and Osric Chau (Ryan Choi) will be joining Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) and Team Flash in this crossover.

In addition to these returning heroes are the return of Tom Cavanagh (Reverse Flash) and Neal McDonough (Damien Darhk).

Plot Reveal

The official synopsis for the event reads:

In “Armageddon,” a powerful alien threat arrives on Earth under mysterious circumstances and Barry (Grant Gustin), Iris (Candice Patton) and the rest of Team Flash are pushed to their limits in a desperate battle to save the world. But with time running out, and the fate of humanity at stake, Flash and his companions will also need to enlist the help of some old friends if the forces of good are to prevail.

DC Comics' Armageddon 2001 Event

Background on the Crossover

This event appears to be based on the 1991 DC Comics crossover event “Armageddon 2001″. This storyline saw DC heroes and villains face off in a time-traveling adventure against a villain known as Monarch. The fact that both the comic storyline of a similar name and the event involving characters known to time travel from the future with Eobard and Mia may mean we shall see something similar play out on the small screen.

It is possible they could even tie up the leftover cliffhanger from the failed Green Arrow and the Canaries backdoor pilot as well. The villain of the crossover could wind up being the one that kidnaps William leading to Mia reteaming with our current day heroes.

Other Details

It is also worth bringing up that, in The Flash Season 7, villain Abra Kadabra teased a threat from the future known as The Chronarch. This character could possibly be their fill-in for Monarch. Ray Palmer and Ryan Choi will both be on-screen together again. With that said, it is highly possible we will see Ryan officially become The Atom like in the comics.

Another confirmed detail is Chyler Leigh’s Alex Danvers’s special role in the crossover. The actress teased this.

Due to COVID restrictions, we cannot get a full-blown multi-show crossover like we have gotten in previous years. Therefore, this is their way of making up for that, explained by showrunner Eric Wallace. He teased:

“Simply put, these are going to be some of the most emotional Flash episodes ever. Plus, there are some truly epic moments and huge surprises that await our fans. And we’re doing them on a scale that’s bigger and bolder than our traditional Flash episodes. So yes, “Armageddon” is a lot more than just another graphic novel storyline. It’s going to be a true event for Flash and Arrowverse fans, old and new. Honestly, I can’t wait for audiences to see what we’ve got planned.”

While this crossover includes a lot of special guests, it is worth noting that no characters from either Superman and Lois, Stargirl, or even newcomers to The CW Naomi will be partaking in the event. The Flash will return with season 8 on November 16th at 8 pm EST/7 pm CT.
