A new report from TheWrap reveals that Cobra Kai breakout star Xolo Maridueña is set to star in Blue Beetle at DC and HBO Max!
Maridueña found his breakout role through Netflix’s Cobra Kai, which originally aired on YouTube TV. The actor will be portraying the titular character Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle for the HBO Max film. Angel Manuel Soto currently helms the movie. Fans long cast Maridueña in the role for a while on the internet.
Maridueña be the first actor to bring the character to life since Jared Brandt Bartlett the CW Superman series Smallville.
Mexican-American writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer will pen the script for DC and HBO Max. Dunnet-Aclocer’s credits include the upcoming Scarface remake for Unviersal as well as the 2019 film Miss Bala.
DC recently announced that Batgirl, starring Leslie Grace in the title role, will premiere on HBO Max, as well as a Val Zod-centered series starring Michael B. Jordan. JJ Abrams, executive producer, and Ta-Nahesi Coates, writer, are developing a separate Superman project for DC. The film is expected to star a Black Clark Kent with rumors suggesting the film will be a period piece, something we have seen recently from DC with Wonder Woman and its sequel Wonder Woman 1984.
The decisions to release these BIPOC-led films on a streaming service rather than in theaters, or through a Same Day Release as Warner Brothers has elected to do for it’s entire 2021 slate, has many fans questioning the motives of the studio. Hopes remain high, however, that anticipation for these projects grows, so too will the odds that they will release in theaters for a wider audience.
