With just a month left to go until, Rick and Morty‘s fifth season premieres, we have a news update on the show. A spin-off series centered on The Vindicators is in development.

News Details

This spin-off will be planned as a miniseries consisting of between eight to ten episodes. News about this series comes from a report that Cartoon Network’s late-night program block, Adult Swim, is working on four short-form spin-offs.

Other shows to be spun off include Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Robot Chicken, and Pretty Face Is Going to Hell. To add, these three spin-offs will also consist of between eight to ten episodes. All four will be available to view on global digital platforms sometime this year or next year. This is exciting news to hear about Adult Swim since Mr. Pickles spun off into Momma Named Me Sheriff.

Adult Swim’s president, Michael Ouweleen has the following to say about the news.

We see it as our mission to put something hilarious within a fingers’ swipe of anyone on the planet. These shorts are a way to meet the next generation of Adult Swim fans where they are, while giving our creators another format to play in and innovate around.

Additional Information

The Vindicators shows the return of heroes Supernova, Vance Maximus, Alan Rails, Crocubot, and Noob Noob. They will go on adventures without the aid of the famous mad scientist and his grandson.

The Adult Swim miniseries will be executive produced by Erica Rosbe and Sarah Carbiener, who wrote the episode off which the series is based. Rick and Morty co-creators, Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, will also serve as executive producers. Rosbe and Carbiener have also made a statement on the news.

We are thrilled to work in the Rick and Morty universe again, and these shorts are an incredible opportunity to explore what happens in the aftermath of the Vindicators saving (or destroying) worlds. We’re so excited to show how this team of superheroes is plenty dysfunctional whether Rick’s around to have half of them murdered or not.

Titles for the other Adult Swim spin-offs are:

  • Alabama Jackson (starring Donald Faison) — “a hilarious action-packed stop-motion animated series” produced by Stoopid Buddy; and
  • Aquadonk Side Pieces (created by Matt Maiellaro and Dave Willis).

You can read more information on these spin-offs in The Hollywood Reporter‘s article.

Background Information

The superhero team come from Rick and Morty Episode 304, which premiered in August 2017. Bryan Newton is the director of the episode, titled “Vindicators 3: The Return of Worldender”. It pokes fun at superhero movie tropes and features death-traps (like the Saw films) and the rapper Logic’s appearance. Members of the team are killed in Rick Sanchez (Roiland)’s traps with the exception of Supernova and Noob Noob.

Gillian Jacobs, Christian Slater, Lance Reddick, Maurice LaMarche, and Justin Roiland voice the heroes in the episode. Tom Kenny voices Million Ants in the episode. However, the news report does not mention the character as part of the spin-off. The report also does not specify whether Jacobs, Slater, Reddick, LaMarche, and Roiland will return to voice Supernova, Vance Maximus, Alan Rails, Crocubot, and Noob Noob.
