It was not so long ago before the pandemic pandemonium that a Terminator project released. Terminator: Dark Fate premiered in Fall 2019 to mixed reactions from critics and fans alike. Afterward, none of us knew what the future of the dystopian technological reality was beyond that. Until now, that is.

In a report by The Hollywood Reporter, Mattson Tomlin will pose as showrunner and executive producer on a Terminator anime series. Netflix and Skydance will co-produce, but will also collaborate with Japanese anime studio and production enterprise, Production I.G

Some Background Information

Netflix is in the process of releasing a Pacific Rim and a Godzilla anime series. Skydance currently controls the Terminator franchise rights in an agreement with co-creator James Cameron. Additionally, Production I.G is most notable for releasing various Japanese works, including the Ghost in the Shell franchise.

Tomlin’s statement for the Terminator series:

Anyone who knows my writing knows I believe in taking big swings and going for the heart. I’m honored that Netflix and Skydance have given me the opportunity to approach Terminator in a way that breaks conventions, subverts expectations and has real guts.

He helped write Netflix’s Project Power, DC Films’ The Batman, and is now working on Little Fish and Mother/Android.

John Derderian, Director of Anime Content — Japan, adds:

Terminator [has been] one of the most iconic sci-fi stories ever created–and has only grown more relevant to our world over time. The new animated series will explore this universe in a way that has never been done before.

Indeed, Terminator holds the hearts of many science-fiction horror fans. The franchise may be a rollercoaster, but it also gave us some lessons on digital technology to ponder.
