Gal Gadot and Patty Jenkins will be returning to Themyscira for a greenlit third Wonder Woman movie. After a historic premiere two days ago, Wonder Woman 1984 became the highest-grossing film at the international box office during the global pandemic. Having earned $16.7 million worldwide, as well as premiere on HBO Max simultaneously, Wonder Woman 1984 has had a rocky few days. The fast-tracked sequel to the Gadot-led film, however, shows that Warner Bros. has confidence in the continuation of the franchise.

In it’s announcement, Warner Bros. has announced that the third Wonder Woman will return to a traditional theatrical release, something the studio does not currently have planned for their 2021 slate. The inclusion of a third film has apparently been “long-planned,” as said Warner Bros. executive Toby Emmerich.

Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman/Diana Prince is set to return in Zack Snyder’s Justice League in 2021, the long-awaited director’s cut of the tumultuous 2017 film. Her character first appeared in the DCEU through Snyder’s work in 2016’s Batman v Superman. Her live-action debut in the film received tons of critical acclaim, leading to her own solo flick with 2017’s Wonder Woman. The character’s first solo outting, set in 1918 in the heart of World War I, dove even deeper into the character’s rich history.

During Disney’s Investor Day, it was revealed that Jenkins would be directing the upcoming Rogue Squadron for Lucasfilm. Rogue Squadron is expected to hit theaters in 2023, though Jenkins was coy with who is attached to write the script. The director did tease that they have been working on the project for a while in an interview with Collider’s Steven Weintraub.

Starring Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Pedro Pascal, and Kristen Wiig, Wonder Woman 1984 is streaming now in the United States on HBO Max, and is playing in theaters where they are open worldwide. The film, originally given a Rotten Tomatoeys score in the 90s by critics prior to release, has since dropped to 66% in the days following it’s American premiere.
