In the pre-pandemic month of February, news reports of the live-action remake for the hit Disney property Lilo and Stitch revealed that the film would release on the streaming platform Disney+. Over nine months later, we don’t know if that is still the case.

Just hours ago, Heat Vision (under The Hollywood Reporter site) announced that Jon M. Chu has been tapped as director of the project. We should have high hopes, as Chu has an interesting number of successful films already in the bag. The filmmaker can be known to have had his hands in the Step Up franchise, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Now You See Me 2, and — most notably — Crazy Rich Asians, which features a cast of actors predominantly of Asian descent.

At this point, it is unclear as to whether this new Lilo and Stitch project will release in theaters under Disney or on the Disney+ service. What we do know, however, is what we’ve reported earlier this year, and that is, Chris Sanders will return as the voice of the blue extraterrestrial creature Stitch. Sanders and Dean DeBlois co-wrote the original film, which released in the summer of 2002 and went on to receive an Academy Award for “Best Animated Feature.” The duo went on to work on DreamWork Animation‘s How to Train Your Dragon trilogy.

Lilo and Stitch took place in Hawaii, where a young human girl and a dog-like creature from outer space met and bonded as family. With the lesson of representation in Crazy Rich Asians, we hope Chu will carry this on with Pacific Island life and culture. For now, we wait!

What do you think? Will you be seeing this film (wherever it will end up)? Let us know! For more Disney-related news and reviews follow The Cinema Spot on Twitter (@TheCinemaSpot) and Instagram (@thecinemaspot_).
